BLESSED TO HAVE THE CENACOLO COMMUNITY IN THE DIOCESE

Dear Friends in Christ,

Greetings and prayers to all you readers.

cena14

We are accustomed to hearing so much bad news nowadays that we can easily forget that good things still happen, often against all the (human) odds.  Here, in the Diocese of Lancaster, near Kendal, we are blessed to have a Cenacolo Community in our midst – a wonderful fruit of the Spirit present in the Diocese for the last 11 years!

A wonderful Italian nun, now quite frail, by the name of Mother Elvira, was appalled by the sight of young people on the streets of northern Italy, who were suffering from one form of addiction or another. So, in July 1983, she decided single-handedly to do something about it, and the result, intended or otherwise, was the movement or ‘School of Life’ we know as Cenacolo, now gradually becoming worldwide.

Sad Departure of Maureen Ingleby

Maureen Ingleby
RIP
In the history of the Cenacolo Community in the United Kingdom, Maureen Ingleby played an almost invisible yet vital role. Maureen was invisible in the sense that she did not hog the limelight, indeed, she never willingly stepped into the limelight at all. Maureen was present at almost all of the significant moments of the devel-opment of Cenacolo in Britain but nearly always in the background. This was not because she had little to offer. Indeed, the opposite was the case. She was an accomplished woman, a capable woman, an intelligent woman. Oh, she had much to offer. But her ministry to Cenacolo was not running meetings or working with planning departments, land agents, diocesan authorities and all the rest of it. No, she left those things to others. Her vital role was her ministry of prayer; Maureen Ingleby was a powerhouse of prayer. Her constancy in prayer underpinned every effort of Bryan, her husband to establish and maintain the work of mercy we know as Cenacolo.
Maureen accompanied so often Bryan to the House at Dodding Green and, as he went about the business of meeting with architects, builders and a plethora of others, Maureen would sit either in the car or the chapel praying the rosary. So many achievements were brokered by Maureen’s persistent prayer. This was the great spiritual providence that the Lads so often pray for and received in abundance from Maureen. And so it was right and proper that a group of the Lads paid a visit to her sick bed and knelt down and offered a rosary with Maureen just a week before she died. And also why the entire House was present at her Requiem Mass. Her death must not lead us to conclude that her prayer for Cenacolo is ended. No, she has now passed through the gateway of death into life eternal where her prayers will still be offered.
Well done good and faithful servant, come and enjoy your Master’s happiness. (Mt 25:21)

Sad Departure of John Godwin

John Godwin
RIP
After a long illness John A Godwin died on the 25th of April 2015. The Requiem Mass was held on the 1st of May at Our Lady and St Benedict in Ampleforth, North Yorkshire co-celebrated by Dom Andrea, Father Michael and two Monks from Ampleforth Abbey. Ten years ago John, Mary and other friends welcomed Don Stefano and the Boys from Italy to the House in Dodding Green. It was a very happy occasion. Later on John become a Trustee and a Fund Raiser. When Mother Elvira was visiting the House, John used to enjoy picking her up from Manchester and Liverpool Airports. He had a close relationship with Mother Elvira and it was always a source of fun and laughter. For many years John and Mary had an apartment in Ambleside and they enjoyed entertaining the Boys and their Cenacolo friends .
May he rest in peace.

Miracles!

Beautiful-Nature-360x260I first encountered Cenacolo early in January 2012.  A neighbour told me of the existence of the organisation after enquiring about my son who she knew was a problem drinker. She told me – “they work miracles!!” I was not sure that I really believed in miracles. I was wrong.

Nativity Open Day 2015

DSCN0014The Nativity Open Day was held at Dodding Green on Saturday 5th December.

Unfortunately this day also happened to be the wettest day on record in the Cumbria area with Kendal being hit by torrential rainfall and severe flooding.

However, the open day went ahead with a limited programme despite the reduced number of visitors who managed to get through the floods under almost impossible conditions. Continue reading

First experience of the Festa della Vita 2015

Sr Elvira 2We would like to tell you of our very first experience of the Festival of Life in Saluzzo, Italy.

It was truly an amazing time for both of us, not just spiritually but also it has inspired us to strengthen our faith and the belief in the power of prayer.  We were amazed by the coming together of families from all over the world with the same thing in common, to save our children’s lives with the Cenacolo way of life, to finally conquer their addictions.

Visit to Corpus Christi High School at Easter

2067If the Resurrection of our Lord is to mean anything on a personal level, it has to be rooted in an experiential way. The lads in the Cenacolo Community, many of whom have lived in the darkness of drug addiction, realise just what ‘resurrection’ means.

It was a great joy to entertain them to lunch on Easter Day. By the kindness of Corpus Christi High School they were able to enjoy a prolonged ganme of football experiencing the excellent facilities on offer at the School. Lunch followed with great good humour and, as a treat, a DVD of ‘Wallace & Gromit,’ and although there was a mix of nationalities, the visual humour transcended the language divide. Continue reading
